Sex Addiction? Fact or Crap?

Posted by:

So many times now we hear that when someone is “caught with their pants down” they are suddenly diagnosed or claim to have an illness; SEXUAL ADDICTION.

I have always thought this to be a huge cop out… because you NEVER hear of anyone seeking help for it UNTIL they are caught doing it!  I have believed all along that we are simply sexual beings – sex was designed to feel good as well as keep our species going.  If it didn’t feel so good we might easily become distracted trying to find food and water and forget all about reproducing.  So, sexual desire is designed to have a high priority and be on the minds of men and women a reported 40-60 times a day.

Side Bar:  I was going to buy my husband one of those little clicker counters to see how many times a day he thought about sex (I was going to do the same), instead he just texted me one day with “click – Click” every time he thought about sex.  You don’t’ even want to know how many texts I received that day… all I will say is it’s a good thing we have unlimited texting.

After you read this article come back here and post your thoughts and ideas please.  I’d love to talk about this!

About the Author

Writing this column has brought me closer to comfort with all topics related to sexuality. I learn and grow with all the comments others make. I would love for this to be more interactive. Having conversations helps bring the subject into the light where we grow more at ease with such a vital part of human experience.

Nothing wrong with thinking about sex often or masturbating regularly. But there are people who do NEED to ejaculate 3+ times a day. If they are powerless to overcome that compulsion, then it is some kind of disorder.

When it happens to celebrities I believe it’s just damage control. When Michael Douglas got caught cheating and went to rehab for sex addiction, his dad Kirk asked him, “Since when is that a bad thing?” Do Douglas, Tiger Woods, Bill Clinton and so on really have this problem? I did read about Warren Beatty’s life in the 60s where he’d need to just have sex with ANYONE including hairy fat older women he’d see in the street.

I think it’s a serious, rare disorder that became a joke because of celebs blaming it out of convenience.

Thank you Keith for your comments. Yes those who suffer from any obsessive/compulsive disorder in any area need our compassion and professional help. That being said, sexual addiction simply because you LOVE sex and want to have a sexual experience several times a day does not make you ill or broken.

It used to be said of those who did NOT want sex that they were “frigid”! What we need to come to terms with is the fact that sexual appetites vary and you need to know this going into a long term relationship to make sure you are well matched. Otherwise you may end up in rehab for something that someone else would greatly appreciate! One persons trash is another persons treasure? You know what I mean?
